Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria was premiered in Venice during the 1639–1640 carnival season. Claudio Monteverdi’s setting of a libretto by Giacomo Badoardo follows the latter portion of Homer’s Odyssey, from Ulysses’ arrival home from the Trojan Wars. King Ulisse finds a trio of suitors trying to woo his wife and queen, Penelope. With the help of the gods, his son Telemachus, and his faithful swineherd Eumete, Ulysses recovers his kingdom, his home, and his beloved wife.

Adapted and choreographed by Trixie Paprika and featuring original music by Stuart Zobel, this production offers a lyrical and cinematic take on the classic. 

The Odyssey will be streamed via ShowTix4U in a premiere event at 8:00 PM PST on May 21. It will be available on demand thereafter until June 25. The show features Noveltease Core Company members Onyx Asili, Fosse Jack, Sailor St. Claire, and Polly Wood, along with guest artists Lulu La Lune, Scarlett Folds, Willy Nilly, and Moscato Extatique. Filmed at Seattle’s Theatre Off Jackson, The Odyssey is directed by Cheeky Diamondz with photographic direction by Alyza DelPan-Monley.

In partnership with the Kirkpatrick Foundation, Oklahoma Contemporary will livestream a six-day reading series of Emily Wilson’s recent translation of Homer’s The Odyssey, an immediate, accessible and boldly contemporary version of the ancient text. Working with a diverse group of local and national actors, musicians, artists and public officials, — including Emily Wilson herself — as readers, Oklahoma Contemporary’s broadcast will include all 24 books of the epic poem

The Big Read is a community reading program designed to link Purdue University and Greater Lafayette. With the help of local and university partners, each year we select a great book, create a calendar of engaging events, and provide free copies of the text to undergraduates, high school students, public libraries, and more. Engagement programs like the Big Read produce demonstrable, positive communal effects, and are essential to Purdue’s mission as a public land grant university seeking to educate and serve the citizens of Indiana. Over the past two years, the English Department has given away over 2000 books to the community as part of The Big Read program.

David Zwirner is pleased to present Dangerous Liaisons, an exhibition of new works by Chris Ofili, on view at the gallery’s 34 East 69th Street location, in New York. The show marks the artist’s fourth solo presentation with the gallery.

The title of the exhibition references René Magritte’s eponymous painting of 1935, which Ofili explores in drawings that employ the compositional organization of the Surrealist’s work as a structure for his own rich and layered colorism. The interwoven patterns and forms in these works create dynamic visuals in which the delicately rendered surfaces optically pulse and vibrate.

Homer’s Odyssey serves as another central theme of the show, with several drawings and paintings devoted to the figures of Calypso and Odysseus. Inspired in part by the music of the island of Trinidad, where Ofili has lived since 2005, the artist has reimagined Calypso—traditionally represented as a deceptive femme fatale—as a striking mermaid, and he has visualized Odysseus as a beautiful, dark-skinned suitor. In the paintings, Ofili presents the characters with curving bodies, sumptuously spread out across the compositions and displayed in layered surfaces filled with arabesque vines and bubble-like forms.

Now in its twelfth year, Southbank Centre’s London Literature Festival brings together today’s leading writers, thinkers and cultural observers to explore the burning issues of our times. 

This year we invite you on a journey across centuries and borders to celebrate the power of literature to reflect on the world in which we live. Our journey takes in everything from a celebration of Homer’s Odyssey to an examination of contemporary America in the lead-up to the midterm elections. 

At the heart of the festival is a celebration of Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, marking its first-ever translation into English by a woman, Emily Wilson. This timeless classic is explored through live readings, talks and workshops with writers from Mary Beard to Madeline Miller. The theme of homeland and journeys continues in appearances from leading writers including Esi Edugyan, Aida Edemariam and Mohsin Hamid. 

"Acclaimed Irish actor/director, Adrian Dunbar, will direct a special site-specific adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey, on five of the most beautiful beaches in Donegal.

The production will be presented episodically with food and music as part of the new cross-border arts initiative ‘Arts Over Borders’.

The novel event will run over the Bank Holiday Weekend, August 24-28.

Arts Over Borders builds on the work developed over the last five years by Seán Doran and Liam Browne (DoranBrowne), on the creation of the ‘Beckett Festival’ and ‘A Wilde Weekend’ in Enniskillen, the ‘Brian Friel Festival’ in Derry and Donegal and more recently their quality year long programme for the opening year of the Seamus Heaney ‘HomePlace’ in Bellaghy."
